Mall Road, one of the most recognizable landmarks of the cultural town of Almora, is increasingly facing traffic congestion due to the parking of police vehicles in a designated no-entry zone near the Post Office area.
Residents and local business owners have expressed concern over the growing inconvenience caused by vehicles stationed for long hours in the restricted zone. According to locals, the practice frequently leads to traffic bottlenecks on the already narrow road, making movement difficult for pedestrians, tourists, and regular commuters.
Mall Road is considered the heart of Almora and remains one of the town’s most visited locations. Tourists visiting the hill town often prefer walking through the area to experience its heritage, architecture, and scenic surroundings. However, recurring traffic congestion has started affecting the overall experience.
Local residents argue that while ordinary citizens are expected to strictly follow traffic regulations, government vehicles are often seen parked in areas where public parking is prohibited. This has raised questions about the uniform implementation of traffic rules.
Traders operating along Mall Road say that congestion not only creates inconvenience for visitors but also affects daily business activities. Several shopkeepers believe that traffic management in the area requires immediate attention to prevent further disruption.
Citizens have also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s repeated appeals for responsible use of vehicles and fuel conservation. They believe that government agencies should lead by example by ensuring that official vehicles are parked only in designated locations.
Social organizations and residents have urged the district administration and police department to review the existing parking arrangements and ensure that traffic regulations are applied equally to everyone.
People believe that preserving the beauty and accessibility of Mall Road is essential for maintaining Almora’s image as a prominent cultural and tourist destination. Proper traffic management, they say, will help protect both the city’s heritage and its reputation among visitors.
