Almora, Uttarakhand: Chief Priest of Shri Jyotirlinga Jageshwar Dham and Mahamandaleshwar Kailashanand Maharaj (Kailash Chandra Bhatt) has submitted a detailed public suggestion memorandum to the Tehsildar and Acting Manager of the Jageshwar Temple Management Committee, seeking improvements in security, sanctity, infrastructure and overall management of the renowned pilgrimage site.
In the memorandum, he stated that Jageshwar Dham is one of the most revered spiritual destinations in Uttarakhand, attracting devotees from across India and abroad throughout the year. Considering its religious significance, several measures are required to preserve the temple’s sanctity and enhance facilities for pilgrims and temple priests.
One of the key demands is a complete ban on the sale of liquor, eggs, meat and non-vegetarian products within the designated temple zone. According to the memorandum, such restrictions would help maintain the sacred atmosphere of the pilgrimage site.
The memorandum also recommends prohibiting the entry of intoxicated individuals into the temple premises. Strict legal action has been suggested against those found violating temple norms and disturbing the spiritual environment.
Addressing traffic and congestion issues, the Chief Priest proposed the development of a dedicated parking facility near the temple area. He suggested that Baldhoti Ground could be developed as a permanent parking site to manage the increasing number of vehicles during festivals and peak pilgrimage seasons.
Security concerns were also highlighted. The memorandum urges the administration to deploy at least four police personnel on a permanent basis within the temple complex to ensure the safety of devotees and maintain law and order.
Special attention has been drawn to the needs of the temple priests. The memorandum requests the construction of a proper changing room within the temple premises so that priests can conveniently change into traditional attire required for daily rituals and worship.
Another significant demand relates to the installation of solar street lights along the routes used by priests while traveling between their villages and the temple. Many priests return home after evening prayers through forested areas where wildlife threats, including tiger movement, are frequently reported. Improved lighting would enhance their safety considerably.
The Chief Priest has also called for the immediate reconstitution of the Jageshwar Temple Management Committee, stating that the absence of a duly formed committee for nearly two years has affected administrative efficiency and development activities.
To preserve the spiritual dignity of the shrine, the memorandum further suggests introducing a respectful dress code for all visitors entering the temple premises. Such a measure, it argues, would help maintain the cultural and religious decorum associated with the ancient temple complex.
In addition, the memorandum seeks official registration of experienced priests who have been serving devotees and performing religious duties for many years. Recognizing them as Assistant Priests would strengthen temple administration and provide formal acknowledgment of their contribution.
Concluding the memorandum, Kailashanand Maharaj appealed to the administration to consider these suggestions positively in the larger interest of devotees, local residents and the preservation of Jageshwar Dham’s spiritual heritage. He expressed hope that timely action on these issues would significantly improve the temple’s management, safety and overall pilgrimage experience.
