Almora: A tribute programme was organized by the “Virasat Hamar Almora” organization on the birth anniversary of late Puran Chandra Sharma, the first State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttarakhand, the first leader from Almora to win an election on the BJP’s lotus symbol, and a former Minister for Mountain Development.
The event was held at his residence, where members of the organization, BJP workers and local citizens gathered to pay homage to the veteran leader. Floral tributes were offered to his portrait, and members of his family were honoured with shawls in recognition of his contribution to public life.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajiv Gururani, Convener of Virasat Hamar Almora, described Puran Chandra Sharma as one of the pioneering leaders who laid the foundation of the BJP in Uttarakhand. He said that during the formative years of the party, Sharma worked tirelessly to spread the ideology of the Jana Sangh and later the BJP among the masses despite numerous challenges.
Gururani stated that leaders such as Puran Chandra Sharma and Govind Singh Bisht played a historic role in strengthening the organization in the region. Their dedication, sacrifice and commitment to public service continue to inspire present and future generations.
He expressed concern that the contributions of many senior political leaders are gradually fading from public memory. To preserve their legacy, he urged the state government to consider establishing a major institution in their names or installing life-size statues at suitable locations in Almora district.
According to him, such initiatives would help younger generations understand the struggles, sacrifices and nation-building efforts of leaders who played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of Uttarakhand.
Late Puran Chandra Sharma’s younger brother, Girish Chandra Sharma, also addressed the gathering. He said that remembering his elder brother on his birth anniversary was an emotional moment for the family. He appreciated the efforts of Virasat Hamar Almora in reviving the memories of veteran Jana Sangh and BJP workers and leaders.
He described the initiative as inspiring and meaningful, noting that many individuals had devoted their entire lives to building the organization. Honouring their families and preserving their memories, he said, was a commendable effort.
Girish Chandra Sharma also suggested organizing a special gathering of former Jana Sangh and BJP workers along with their families so that younger generations could learn about the history, values and struggles associated with the organization.
Participants at the programme remembered Puran Chandra Sharma’s contribution to politics, organization-building and public service. Speakers highlighted his simplicity, dedication and commitment to social welfare, describing him as a role model for future generations.
The organization announced that it would continue its efforts to recognize and honour notable personalities from Almora and Uttarakhand who have made significant contributions to society, public life and the development of the state.
Among those present at the event were BJP State Executive Member Rajiv Gururani, Ishwar Upadhyay, Inder Singh Negi, former councillor Deepak Verma, Krishna Tilara, Kamlesh Sanwal, Harish Jina, Suresh Sharma and several other party workers and citizens.
