Swati Kapoor’s Mission: No One Should Sleep Hungry
Haldwani, Uttarakhand:
In the heart of Haldwani city, a unique social initiative called ‘Thaal Sewa’, run by social worker Swati Kapoor, has become a beacon of hope for hundreds of underprivileged individuals. Believing that feeding the hungry is the greatest form of service, Swati has transformed her mission—“No one should sleep hungry”—into a grassroots movement.
Swati is the co-founder of the Little Miracles Foundation, under which Thaal Sewa was launched. The initiative provides a wholesome meal for just ₹5, aiming to support those who struggle to afford basic necessities.

The meal served under Thaal Sewa includes high-quality food such as dal, rice, vegetables, and fresh salad. The service operates on all weekdays, and nearly 1,200 people are fed every day through this initiative.
Swati believes that bringing real change in society requires action, not just words. “Hunger is the greatest suffering. Unless we stand together, no true change can happen. Our effort is to ensure that not a single person in Haldwani sleeps on an empty stomach,” she says.
Originally from Almora, Swati is the daughter of renowned journalist and social worker Kamal Kapoor. Her dedication to social service was recently recognised when she was honoured by Padma Shri awardee and internationally acclaimed folk singer Dr. Malini Awasthi during a prestigious ceremony held in Lucknow. The recognition is a public acknowledgment of her relentless efforts for humanitarian causes.
Her husband, Harit Kapoor, is a well-known businessman in Haldwani and provides unwavering support in all her social endeavours. The Kapoor family resides in Vaishali Colony and has become a symbol of compassion and service in the region.
The local community is deeply engaged with Thaal Sewa, and a large number of youth and volunteers actively participate in daily food distribution, keeping alive the spirit of humanity. Senior citizens and various social organisations have also praised Swati’s recognition and the values her work upholds.
Members of the Punjabi community in Almora have expressed immense pride in Swati Kapoor’s achievement, celebrating her as a daughter who has set an example in selfless service.
On this occasion, veteran journalist Dinesh Mansera remarked, “Thaal Sewa proves that small efforts, when backed by sincerity and compassion, can lead to significant change.” He added that Swati Kapoor’s work is now a source of inspiration not only for Haldwani but for the entire state of Uttarakhand, and the model could well be replicated in other districts in the near future.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that Swati Kapoor’s one plate of food has reached thousands of hearts, laying the foundation for a movement driven by love, empathy, and social responsibility.
