Rescue team safely releases the snake into the forest; public urged to remain alert
Almora.
Panic gripped the residents of the Cement Kothi area in Panyauḍiyar Ward when a rat snake (Dhamin species) entered a house. Locals immediately informed Ward Councillor Amit Sah Monu, who swiftly contacted the Quick Response Team (QRT) of the Forest Department, led by Satyendra Singh Negi.
Following the alert, team members Neeraj Negi and Manoj Joshi reached the spot and safely rescued the snake, later releasing it into a nearby forest. During the rescue operation, a crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene. Although rat snakes are non-venomous, their length and speed often alarm people.
Increased Snake Activity in Urban Areas
Recently, the presence of snakes in urban areas has increased. The Forest Department has appealed to the public to remain cautious, especially during the summer and monsoon seasons when snakes often venture into homes in search of food. Their primary diet consists of rodents and frogs, which are commonly found in unhygienic areas.
Cleanliness Can Prevent Such Incidents
The Forest Department, along with Councillor Monu, has urged residents to maintain cleanliness in and around their homes to deter rodents and other small creatures that attract snakes. Councillor Monu appreciated the prompt response from the Forest Department, stating, “Whenever we inform them, they reach out immediately. Their support is commendable.”
