Freedom Fighter Descendants’ Cell Strongly Condemns Incident, Demands Action
Bageshwar, Correspondent:
A shocking incident of disrespect towards a revered freedom fighter has come to light from Bageshwar district, where a memorial plaque dedicated to the late Ram Singh Garhiya—who sacrificed everything for India’s independence—was vandalized and thrown into a toilet by miscreants. The act has sparked widespread outrage among families of freedom fighters across Uttarakhand.
It is noteworthy that during a meeting chaired by the District Magistrate last month as part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations, descendants of freedom fighters had demanded the installation of a plaque in Garhiya’s memory. The plaque was prepared by the village panchayat and was meant to be publicly installed in the village.
Reacting strongly to the incident, Avadhesh Pant, State General Secretary of the Uttarakhand Congress Freedom Fighter Descendants’ Cell, condemned the act as anti-national and deeply shameful. He called on the state government and district administration to take immediate cognizance and initiate strict action against those responsible. He further demanded that the plaque be reinstated with dignity at an appropriate location.
Pant said, “This disgraceful act is not just an insult to the sacrifices of our freedom fighters, but also a blow to the spirit of patriotism. It is extremely unfortunate that our martyrs are being forgotten. To some extent, our current education system is also to blame, as it has failed to instill a strong sense of nationalism in the younger generation.”
He warned the administration that if no action is taken within a week, families of freedom fighters will be compelled to launch a protest at the Bageshwar district headquarters.
