Gairsain: Opposition Spends the Night Inside Assembly, Protests Wrapped in Blankets

Talks with Speaker Fail, Opposition Remains Firm Despite CM’s Appeal

Gairsain, Uttarakhand – The first day of the Monsoon Session of the Uttarakhand Assembly was marked by intense uproar and political unrest. After a day-long protest, Congress MLAs spent the entire night inside the Assembly hall, wrapped in blankets. Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya, along with other Congress legislators, was seen sitting and lying on the floor of the House.

On Tuesday evening, an attempt was made to hold talks between the opposition and the Speaker of the Assembly, but the dialogue failed. Later, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami personally called the opposition leaders, requesting them to end the protest. However, the opposition remained adamant on its three key demands: the transfer of the District Magistrate (DM), suspension of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), and withdrawal of all FIRs registered against party members.

As the night progressed, the opposition’s stance grew firmer. Deputy Leader of Opposition, Bhuwan Kapri, released a video on social media late at night, showing visuals from inside the Assembly. In the video, he clarified, “There has been no vandalism inside the House. These are baseless rumors. The BJP government is trying to divert attention from the real issues. We are committed to our democratic protest.”

Meanwhile, independent MLA from Khanpur, Umesh Kumar, also shared a video from inside the Assembly on Facebook, showing opposition legislators lying on the floor covered in blankets.

This unprecedented move by the opposition has added a new twist to the state’s political landscape. Congress MLAs have asserted that they will continue their sit-in protest until the government takes concrete action on their demands.

All eyes are now on Wednesday’s Assembly proceedings. It remains to be seen whether the government yields to the opposition’s pressure or whether the standoff escalates further.
