In a significant move to strengthen legal education in Uttarakhand, renowned educationist Dr. Vasudha Pant submitted a memorandum on Tuesday to the state’s Higher Education Minister, Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat. The memorandum demands that the Faculty of Law at Soban Singh Jeena University, Almora, be accorded the status of a National Law University (NLU).
Dr. Pant emphasized that although the “National Law University Uttarakhand Act” was passed in 2011, the state is yet to witness the establishment of its own NLU, even after 14 years. She described this delay as a serious gap in the state’s legal education infrastructure.
The memorandum proposes that granting NLU status to Soban Singh Jeena University would not only implement the existing legislation but also provide students with access to high-quality legal education within the state, eliminating the need to move elsewhere.
“It’s surprising that a well-educated state like Uttarakhand still lacks a National Law University,” Dr. Pant remarked. “Such an institution would significantly enhance the state’s judicial and academic reputation.”
It is noteworthy that Dr. Pant had previously submitted a similar memorandum to the Chief Minister through the District Magistrate of Almora on the occasion of Constitution Day (26th November).
Minister Dr. Rawat appreciated the initiative and assured that the state government will consider the proposal seriously. The demand has garnered widespread support from both academic and legal communities, reflecting the growing consensus on the need for an NLU in Uttarakhand.
