Ramnagar. A research study based on rural consumers of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand has highlighted the growing role of mobile commerce in transforming the social, economic and public life of rural communities.
The study reveals that mobile commerce is no longer limited to online shopping and digital payments. It has emerged as an important medium for accessing education, healthcare, market information, financial transactions, social communication and government services.
However, the research identifies weak connectivity, lack of digital literacy, cost, concerns related to online security and the complexity of digital services as major challenges to wider adoption in rural areas.
The study emphasizes that providing internet connectivity alone is not sufficient for rural digital development. Reliable digital infrastructure, simple and locally relevant services, digital literacy, secure digital payment systems and better integration of government services with mobile platforms are essential. Digital training at the village level, services in local languages and accessible technical support can further strengthen rural digital inclusion.
The research also points out that greater access to financial services, government schemes, education, healthcare and market opportunities through mobile commerce can reduce time and costs while promoting financial inclusion and livelihood opportunities. In the context of mountainous and infrastructure-constrained regions, the study provides an important policy foundation for moving beyond “digital access” towards “digital empowerment” and “digital governance.”
