Concerns over compliance with Biomedical Waste Management Rules despite substantial monthly expenditure

Serious concerns have been raised regarding the management of biomedical waste at Almora Base Hospital. It is alleged that the hospital is not fully complying with the Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016, despite significant monthly expenditure on waste disposal services.
Biomedical waste includes infectious and hazardous materials generated during patient treatment, diagnosis and immunisation. Proper segregation, collection and scientific disposal of such waste are essential to protect public health and the environment.
Under the Biomedical Waste Management Rules, waste must be segregated into four colour-coded categories—Yellow, Red, White (translucent) and Blue—depending on its nature. The rules also require that biomedical waste should not be stored for more than 48 hours within hospital premises and must be disposed of only through authorised Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facilities.
Experts warn that improper handling or disposal of biomedical waste can increase the risk of infection and environmental contamination. Authorities are expected to ensure strict compliance with the prescribed rules and investigate any alleged violations.
