Two-day event features Sanskrit drama, group song, debate, extempore speech and shloka recitation
Haldwani: The District-Level Sanskrit Competition 2026, organised under the aegis of the Uttarakhand Sanskrit Sansthan, commenced with enthusiasm at KVM Public School, Lamachaur, Haldwani, on Wednesday.
The competition aims to encourage students to develop an interest in Sanskrit language and literature, strengthen their appreciation of Indian culture and traditions, and provide them with a platform to showcase their talents.
The two-day event is being conducted for the junior category on October 7 and the senior category on October 8. Students are participating in various disciplines, including Sanskrit drama, Sanskrit group song, Sanskrit debate, extempore speech and shloka recitation.
The event was inaugurated by chief guest Gajraj Singh Bisht through the traditional lighting of the lamp. Special guest Dr. Yashoda Prasad Semwal, along with members of the school management, teachers and dignitaries associated with Sanskrit education, attended the programme.
A large number of students and accompanying teachers from different development blocks of the district are participating in the competition. A total of 15 schools are participating in Sanskrit drama, 14 in group song, 12 in debate, 10 in extempore speech and 8 schools in shloka recitation.
The students impressed the guests, judges and audience with their confident and engaging performances. The competition is also aimed at developing Sanskrit communication skills, stage confidence, pronunciation, acting, singing, reasoning and appreciation of Indian cultural values among students.
District Coordinator Dr. Hemchandra Joshi said that Sanskrit is not merely a language but an important foundation of India’s knowledge tradition, culture and values. He said such competitions provide students with an opportunity to connect with Sanskrit and bring out their hidden talents.
He extended his best wishes to all participating students and teachers and emphasised the need to organise such programmes regularly for the promotion and preservation of Sanskrit.
Co-Coordinator Dr. Rajendra Bhatt, along with Shri Bhagwan Singh Bora, Shri Yashwant Singh, Dr. Kailash Chandra Singh Negi, Smt. Priya Kumari, Kusumpal, Maya and other members of the organising committee, played an important role in ensuring the smooth and successful conduct of the event.
