Almora :
Continuing its mission to raise environmental consciousness through awareness initiatives, Green Hills Trust organized its latest session of “School of Environment” at PM SHRI Government Girls’ Inter College, Almora, on Thursday. The program aimed at educating students about climate change, global warming, and the urgent need for sustainable practices.
Previously, the program has been conducted in several other institutions including Government Inter College Hawalbagh, GIC Syalidhar, Green Field Public School, Spring Dales Public School, Sharda Public School, Guru Academy, Inspiration Public School, and Beersheba Inter College.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Vasudha Pant, Secretary of the Trust, explained in detail the causes and consequences of climate change. She emphasized that human greed is a primary driver of environmental degradation and urged students to awaken their environmental consciousness.
> “Every individual, especially every student, must critically examine their own habits and lifestyle to reduce their carbon footprint,” Dr. Pant said.
She stressed that the worst effects of climate change will impact countries like India, especially through the depletion of natural water resources. Citing the in-depth research conducted by Prof. J.S. Rawat on the Kosi River, she highlighted how perennial rivers and their tributaries in the Himalayan region are now drying up, signaling the early stages of desertification.
> “Our mountains are already witnessing the impact of climate change. Rivers that once flowed year-round are vanishing, and this ecological shift is deeply alarming,” she added.
Dr. Pant concluded by encouraging students to take small but meaningful actions towards environmental preservation, emphasizing that real change begins with individual responsibility.
The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from the students, who actively engaged in discussions and demonstrated a keen interest in learning about environmental issues.
